Marc Bauer - ‘Inventory' @ the 21st Biennale of Sydney, Australia

16-03-2018 - 11-06-2018

21st Biennale of Sydney

His project ‘Inventory’ is based on a residence in Brittany, resulting in sixty pieces of hand-made faience pottery, a series of works on paper and a site-specific wall drawing. Exploring ideas of memory and history, both personal and collective.
Bauer’s installation is inspired by interviews he conducted in the commune Quimper and the port city Brest where he spoke to women who worked from 1960 to 1990 at a naval shipyard, a fish processing plant, a ceramics factory or a painting atelier. The hand-painted ceramics relate the story of a fictional character, a woman who worked in a shipyard in Brest. The monochromatic images and text reveal intimate vignettes of everyday domesticity. The accompanying works on paper and the site-specific wall drawing provide context derived from the lives of the women Bauer interviewed, articulating their struggle for emancipation and better working conditions.
