Boris Mikhailov

04 February - 15 March 2015

Deweer Gallery takes great pleasure in announcing its second one-person exhibition with the internationally celebrated Ukrainian photographer Boris Mikhailov. For this exhibition the artist himself makes a selection from his ‘Yesterday’s Sandwich’-series.

The ‘Yesterday’s Sandwich’-series was made between 1960 and 1970; each work is the result of a photomontage. The images of the photomontages are made by superimposing – in a very spontaneous and almost hazardous way – different photographic images. About his technique the artist states two important things at least: one could interpret the technique as the introduction of cinematic language into his photography (by dissolving the distance between two shots) and that it is a typical Soviet technique. The photomontages are assemblages of elements that carry opposing meanings thus reflecting the dualism and the contradictions of Soviet society. During the Soviet era the series indeed was never officially shown. Initially and during almost 35 years the series only existed in the form of slides to be screened. It was only at the end of the 1980s, when Mikhailov started to live in the West too, that he began making the first prints.
