Matthieu Laurette – Real Estate

10 November - 16 December 2007

Conceptualizing and quoting the works of other artists and using their output merely as materials is only one of the methods by which Matthieu Laurette analyses the way our cultural economy functions. His second solo-show at Deweer Art Gallery was an ensemble of two grand-scale installations in which this method was demonstrated. A first one is based on Joseph Beuys' installation Plight (1985) from the collection of Centre Pompidou and another one is based on documents about Andy Warhol's death and estate: his death certificate and will. Both of these complex and multi-layered works will turn Real Estate into a fascinating reflection on the existing system of artistic values and goods. At the same time, there is an association with the current transitional phase in the gallery's existence. The former carpet factory, from which the gallery had been taking over more and more surface during recent years, has finally been closed down. Both the buildings and the stock of carpets this process generated, are approached thematically and even recycled materially in Real Estate.
