Anna Vogel - Civitas

24 October - 09 December 2018

Anna Vogel (°1981, Herdecke) is an upcoming German artist. After a successful spring in which she won the Zonta Cologne Art Award 2018 and participated in well-received exhibitions at Huis Marseille, Amsterdam (NL), Museum für Photographie Braunschweig (DE) and Kunsthaus NRW Kornelimünster (DE), the artist exhibits for the second time at Deweer Gallery. Using a distinctive, timeless visual language, Anna Vogel combines her own and found photographic images which are altered through graphic additions or deletions. Some of her recent works evince a topical interest. Anna Vogel engages with subjects such as intolerance, democracy, refugee crisis and human rights.

Anna Vogel studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in Germany. She was a student of the renowned photographers Thomas Ruff and Andreas Gursky, whose work is indebted to the minimalist visual language of the artist couple Bernd and Hilla Becher. Andreas Gursky, who considers Anna Vogel one of his most talented students, has been following and supporting her to this day.

Anna Vogel won the Zonta Cologne Art Award 2018, an award for female artists working in (the region of) Cologne. The award is accompanied by a solo exhibition at Fuhrwerkswaage Kunstraum e.V., Cologne, Germany (September 2018), a catalogue and an edition. Vogel already had several solo exhibitions, such as at the Kunstverein Hildesheim in Hildesheim, Germany (2017), the Kunstverein Recklinghausen in Recklinghausen, Germany (2015) and in Kunstsammlung NRW, Düsseldorf, Germany (2014). In 2018 Anna Vogel already participated in diverse group exhibitions: ‘Florale Transformation II’ in Krefelder Kunstverein, Krefeld, Germany, ‘Fragen an das Medium, Sabrina Fritsch, Anna Vogel and Matthias Wollgast’ in Kunsthaus NRW, Kornelimünster, Germany, ‘Bernd, Hilla and the others / Photografie from Dusseldorf’ in Huis Marseille, Amsterdam, the Netherlands and ‘Jenseits des Sichtbaren. Fotografische Erzählung als Spur - Curtis Anderson I Louisa Clement I Owen Gump I Sigmar Polke | Anna Vogel’ in Museum für Photographie Braunschweig in Braunschweig, Germany. In 2016 her work has been exhibited in a group show with Louisa Clement and Moritz Wegwerth at Sprüth Magers in Berlin. This expo was curated by Andreas Gursky.
