Stephan Balkenhol (Duitsland, 1957) is één van de belangrijkste hedendaagse beeldhouwers. Hij is vooral bekend voor zijn in hout gesneden vrijstaande, figuratieve beelden van mensen en dieren, maar maakt daarnaast ook veel reliëfs en tekeningen. Door zijn beelden of zijn reliëfs geheel of gedeeltelijk te beschilderen slaat hij een brug tussen beeldhouwkunst en schilderkunst.
Vormelijk typerend voor zijn werk is dat bv. in de zgn. figurenzuilen figuur en sokkel samen uit een en hetzelfde stuk hout zijn gehouwen waardoor ze nooit los van elkaar bestaan.
Balkenhol gebruikt verschillende soorten hout, met een voorkeur voor wawahout uit Ghana, populier en Douglasspar.
De motieven van Balkenhol’s beelden zijn meestal mannen, vrouwen en dieren, die zeer sereen en zonder noemenswaardige expressie worden voorgesteld.

Stephan Balkenhol (Allemagne, 1957) est un des sculpteurs les plus importants de nos jours. Il est principalement connu pour ses sculptures figuratives, de gens et d’animaux, taillées directement dans le bois. A part les sculptures en trois dimensions, il fait aussi beaucoup de reliefs et de dessins. En colorant ses sculptures et reliefs entièrement ou partiellement, il cherche à approcher la sculpture de la peinture.
Au niveau formel une caractéristique très typique est que dans par exemple ses colonnes figuratives, la figure et son socle sont réalisés d’une seule et même pièce de bois, ce qui fait que sculpture et socle restent toujours inséparables.
Balkenhol se sert de plusieurs sortes de bois, quoique le bois wawa d’origine africaine, le peuplier et le pin Douglas jouissent d’une certaine préférence.
Les motifs des sculptures de Stephan Balkenhol consistent pour la plus grande partie d’hommes et de femmes et d’animaux. Tous sont représentés d’une façon très sereine et presque sans la moindre émotion.

Stephan Balkenhol (Germany, 1957) is one of the most important sculptors of our age. He is mainly known for freestanding, figurative sculptures of men, women and animals, directly sculpted in wood. He also makes lots of reliefs and drawings. By colouring – entirely or partially – his sculptures and reliefs, he tries to bridge the gap between sculpture and painting.
Formally speaking, one of the most typical aspects of his sculptures, especially in the so-called figure columns, is that motive and base are cut from one and the same piece of wood. By which figure and base can never be considered separately.
Balkenhol uses different sorts of wood although the African wawa wood, the poplar and the Douglas pine seem to enjoy his preference.
The themes and motives of Balkenhol’s sculptures are mostly men, women and animals. They are represented in a very serene way, without significant emotion.
