Introduction

Stefaan Dheedene's oeuvre reads both as a critical exploration of contemporary conventions on video work and especially sculpture and installation. As such, he focuses, respectively, on the documentary mode, on sculpture as a grammar of the object, and on the installation as a sculptural "situation". However, Dheedene also formulates new proposals to circumvent these conventions. Based on the refusal to accept sculpture and installation as subjective, recuperated genres, he presents entirely new conceptual possibilities and infuses the sculptural practice with critical relevance.

Deweer Gallery presented solo-exhibitions by Stefaan Dheedene in 2007, 2009 and 2011 and presented the artist solo at Art Cologne in 2008. In 2009 the S.M.A.K. – Stedelijk Museum voor Actuele Kunst, Ghent showed the solo-exhibition “Ghost Shift”. In 2006 Stefaan Dheedene made solo-exhibitions for the same S.M.A.K., Ghent ( “Billy”) and for Bozar, Brussels (“HI STORY”). Recently Dheedene took part in “BEL ETAGE – WAS IST IST ..!!”, a Manifesta 9 Parallell Event in Genk (2012), in “Draussen ist feindlich” (2011, Bel Etage, Berlin Mitte), and in “Dreams of Power”, at the Kultury Zamek Center in Poznan, Poland (2011). In September 2012 Stefaan Dheedene participates at “Façade” in Netwerk / Center For Contemporary Art, Aalst.
