PANAMARENKO

Introduction

From his hometown of Antwerp, Panamarenko acquires, from the late 60s, national and international reputation as a creator of, amongst others fantastic happenings, flying objects and drawings.

Three elements make Panamarenko an exceptional, incomparable artist. Panamarenko, like no other, succeeded in linking the technical-scientific to the poetic. His artworks are not the mere creations of an engineer, and his poetic objects are indeed underpinned by a thorough scientific knowledge. He is able, through his unbridled imagination, to deal with the rules, laws, and usages of science, art, and society in an inventive and entirely free manner, which results in an almost legendary uniqueness. Panamarenko is also one of those exceptional artists who - like, for instance, German artist Joseph Beuys - make no division between life and work. His pseudonym Panamarenko is in this respect a small yet significant detail.

Panamarenko already had nine solo exhibitions at Deweer Gallery, the first seven with catalogue. ‘Panamarenko & Deweer Gallery - A Brilliant Story Since 1983’ (2018), ‘Panamarenko Revisited’ (2013), ‘Klapperschroef-Rugzak-Met-Vliegenier & other works’ (2005), ‘Panamarenko @ Deweer Art Gallery / 1983 - 2003 / van Donderwolk tot Donnariet’ (2003), ‘Snijboon - Monocedo’ (2000), ‘Panamarenko 1967-1997’ (1997), ‘Knikkebeen en andere auto’s’ (1994), ‘Panamarenko’ (1990) en ‘Panamarenko (1983).

He had a solo exhibition ‘Panamarenko Universum’ in 2014-2015 at the M HKA - Museum of Contemporary Art in Antwerp, Belgium. In 2014 he was invited for a solo in the Städtische Galerie Delmenhorst, Germany. Besides, he had solo exhibitions in amongst others CC Scharpoord, Knokke-Heist, Belgium (2011), MODEM, Debrecen, Hungary (2010), FRAC Nord - Pas de Calais, Dunkerque, France (2009), Royal Museums of Fine Arts of Belgium, Brussels, Belgium (2005), Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofia, Madrid, Spain (2002), MARTa, Herford, Germany (2002), S.M.A.K.
