Gabriele BEVERIDGE

Introduction

Gabriele Beveridge creates sculptural assemblages in which she stages found images amongst arrangements of eclectic materials. Removing the context by which these images and materials were originally associated with, Beveridge creates environments that are both familiar and uncanny at once. Her work crosses the boundaries between different mediums, using objects that possess an inherent symbolic worth, as diverse as shop fittings, hand-blown glass and faded advertisements from beauty salon windows. The artist employs a precise use of framing, propping and hanging that allows the images to sumptuously slip off the salvaged objects on which they rest. The result is an alluringly tactile interplay between found image and object that demonstrates a honed consciousness of the material quality of images and their power to interrupt the display of an object.
