George Little - Split Bisque

25 October - 10 December 2017

Under the title Split Bisque, George Little (°1988) prepares his second solo exhibition at Deweer Gallery. The British artist let us know that the lobster - more specific the chela’s (claws) of this delicacy - will be the common, visual thread through the exhibition. The child of a historically important chef and a childhood spent out the kitchen doors in London's Soho, Littles works are often overwhelmed by references to food and its etiquette of display. His work reads as the investigation (and celebration) into nostalgia to an ideal of Southern European intellectualism and its home in the interiors of bars, cafe's and restaurants.

Besides a playful, sculptural intervention that is of institutional kitchens with diverse materials and 'readymades' and winks to the storage areas of galleries and museums, Little promises above all layered paintings that have sculptural attributes, like panels of gingham table cloth or clips used for holding down table cloths on a windy terrace, that continually probe an internal language. By the combination of density, sparsity and hierarchy, abstraction and naturalistic reproduction, as well as the repetitions of lobsters form, George Little allures to the questions of modernisms contemporary functionality and its afterglow.
